This is Max. Everything normal here. Nothing weird about Max - until he burps. When Max burps he becomes a huge monster, with teeth like swords, who can jump over buildings, roar and eat whole dustbins. It's great being a monster and saving people, his aim 'to protect and do good stuff', unless he sneezes when he didn't mean to, changes back, and finds himself far from home in just his pants. But something starts causing a lot of damage in their quiet suburb, and it isn't Max. His nemesis, Peregrine, a boy his age, is relentlessly on the trail of this monster, and has invented his POOP (Portable Operating Omni Prison) machine to trap it. Max has to catch the real culprit, before Peregrine can catch him!

Ben's father is in prison and his mum, a former child genius, is barely hanging on to her sanity. When Ben and his classmates are nearly killed in a coach crash in Belgium, Ben starts to experience flashbacks: visitations to the brutal start of World War 1 and the uncertain world of Corporal Sam Lyle. Is Ben going mad too, like his mum, or is there another reason why he finds himself in a war zone in 1914? Who is the spectral figure that haunts both the boy and the soldier? Do angels exist?

Septimus feels out-of-place in his village, where everyone else his age is called Garp, Darg, Smerg or Blaarg. Good, honest names that sound like you have just swallowed something pointy or are sneezing into custard. Even his parents make him feel like a complete stranger (especially his parents). Then he inherits something strange and frightening from his uncle. A Hairy Hand. It has the magical ability to find buried treasure, which suits his parents (thieves by trade) down to the ground. However, instead of making his life better, things suddenly gets a lot more dangerous. So it is up to Sept to find out what else the Hand knows, and put things right.
