Martin Brudnizki's maximalist style and ability to transform high-profile venues into iconic spaces have earned him a prestigious reputation internationally. This debut book explores how the celebrated designer uses the language of color to create glamorous interiors that are both opulent and deeply resonant, where every shade tells a singular stor

For Brudnizki, color is an essential ingredient for storytelling and conjuring atmosphere. Color is a force that brings his spaces to life, defining them, and enhancing the experience within them; it is a character in itself and Brudnizki uses it to blur the lines between eras and styles, to marry heritage with modern luxury. From the fantasy-full and decadent rococo interiors of London members club Annabel’s to the soft, muted palette of the Splendido’s Baronessa Suite and the Parisian spirit of the restaurant at New York’s outpost of Fouquet’s, Brudnizki’s signature paintbrush imbues his interiors with idiosyncrasy and flair. In this enchanting volume, the designer draws inspiration from nature, art, fashion, and history to show us how color influences his life and work. The charming design of the book brings the magic of his world to life: classical busts are unmoored from their pedestals, silky peonies embellish texts, candelabras glow, and birds flutter free from their frescoes and travel with us for pages. Each chapter is devoted to a single color, illuminating how Brudnizki leverages the emotional power of color to enhance the overwhelmingly beautiful and luxurious spaces he creates.

A celebration of the many breeds of dog we love, as seen through the pages of Country Life magazine, from working the fields to romping through splendid gardens to lounging in beautifully appointed sitting rooms.Throughout its 125-year history, Country Life has chronicled our love affair with dogs. This elegantly designed volume features seventy breeds based on Royal Kennel Club classifications: hounds, working dogs, terriers, gundogs, herding dogs, toys, and utility. Each breed profile includes modern and archival photographs along with history, anecdotes, and lore. Here we see the romance of English country living through a canine lens. From Jilly Cooper and her rescue greyhound to Trudie Styler’s wolfhounds and many famous country estates, such as Badminton House, Belvoir Castle, Castle Howard, and Holkham Hall-as well as the Royal Family with their dogs at Balmoral, Windsor Castle, and Highgrove-the book offers an intimate look at Britain’s stately houses, gardens, and gorgeous countryside. Most of today’s breeds originated in Britain or were codified by the Royal Kennel Club, as covered by Country Life from its inception. The book poignantly raises awareness about breeds that are today considered vulnerable to extinction, such as the winsome Norwich terrier, the stout bull terrier, or the resolute otterhound, currently ranked most endangered. Also included are non-native breeds that have long associations with the Royal Family or the nobility-such as Pomeranians, Queen Victoria’s lifelong passion, and pugs, native to China but long an aristocratic favourite.

Formal garden design remains popular because it gives natural spaces a feeling of serenity and structure, though many homeowners and home gardeners don’t realize structure doesn’t have to mean all closely clipped shrubs and geometric borders, but that it can be interpreted as a series of arched trellises draped with vining, heady, languid roses or using even the wildest-branching native perennials in arrangements or proportions that help the eye discern where each plant’s borders begin and end. Over her 30-year career, Thompson has become recognized as master of creating decadently planted, well proportioned, English-style gardens rendered modern by a staunch commitment to biodiversity, and to the eye this translates as a looser formality than English gardens of the past, though every bit as lovely and luscious. Thompson peppers her wonderfully witty texts with a dash of lore as a nod to the idea that we are not, in fact, in complete charge of how our gardens grow; other forces are always at work, as they should be when we allow sustainable practices to help us guide rather than try to dominate nature’s own efforts.

Discover La Foce, the Renaissance villa and classically inspired twentieth-centurygarden, at the dawn of its hundredth anniversary-once a barren Tuscan estatebrought to life through the extraordinary vision and determination of Iris andAntonio Origo.

In 1924, English-born biographer and writer Iris Origo (1902-1988) and her husband,Antonio, purchased La Foce, a sprawling estate centered around a half-ruinedfifteenth-century villa with a dream that was as ambitious as it was audacious. Guided by adeep-seated desire to make a difference, the Origos dedicated their lives to transformingan impoverished terrain into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, andvineyards. With English architect Cecil Pinsent, they refurbished the house and designedan elegant terraced garden with box hedges, a rose garden, fountains, and awisteria-covered pergola. The dramatic story of La Foce-from the taming of the wild valley and personal loss towartime strife-is told by the Origos’ granddaughter Katia Lysy, with reminiscences byBenedetta Origo, the couple’s elder daughter. The letters and diaries of Iris Origo weavebeautifully into a personal narrative of the creation of the property and the people behindit. Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldoutannotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images ofthe creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

This is the first of Pentreath’s books to present his own output in its entirety-from hispersonal residences in Dorset, London, and Scotland that brought him international fameto many old and new houses that he has designed and some of the larger, town-scaledprojects that make his practice unique in the world of traditional design. Although theresults range from his colorful and romantic versions of the English country cottage totraditional splendor, there are underlying ideas that inform the breadth of his output-asense of scale, proportion, craft, detail, sustainability, and appropriateness-that have auniversal relevance today.Pentreath has authored as well as taken all photographs in this book, which looks at somethirty case studies, large and small, including many previously unpublished works. Thedesigns encompass an understanding of materials, texture, classical and vernaculardetail, color, richness, and simplicity by turn-as exemplified in both sumptuous andhonest interiors, grand country houses, and pragmatically organized town plans. Whilebeing steeped in a learned classicism, Pentreath’s work is celebrated by young and oldaround the world, as exemplified by his coverage in major media outlets.

India Hicks's affectionate tribute to her beloved mother, Lady Pamela Hicks, and her extraordinary life surrounded by dazzling people, places, houses, and history.

For years designer India Hicks has been sharing anecdotes about the life of her mother,
Lady Pamela Hicks, or Lady P, as she is affectionately known.
This new visual biography is an extraordinary chronicle of Lady Pamela’s life. Daughter of
the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the last viceroy of India, Lady Pamela was a first
cousin to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and served as a bridesmaid and
lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II, before marrying legendary interior designer David
Hicks. Sifting through her parents’ archives, India has uncovered a trove of material about
her mother. This beautifully illustrated personal history includes ephemera such as letters
from the Queen; images of the houses and gardens where she grew up and made her
wonderfully elegant home; details of her extraordinary work during Indian independence,
her marriage to David Hicks and the homes he designed for them, the assassination of her
father in Ireland, and later life in the country, as well as the lessons India has learned from
her mother having had a front row seat at so many historical events.
An exemplary life, captured in beautiful images-for lovers of history, royal watchers, and
all style enthusiasts.

The Amalfi Coast has always been a sought after destination among artists and the international jet set thanks to its spectacular topography, which combines a rugged coast and cliff-side villages overlooking the sea with the climate and the light of the Mediterranean, and the characteristic traditions and craftsmanship of the Campania region. The visitors to the Coast include major names that helped make it famous, such as Gore Vidal, Rudolph Nureyev, Greta Garbo, John Steinbeck, Gianni Agnelli, Jackie Kennedy and Lee Radziwill, Franco Zeffirelli, Maria Callas, Princess Margaret, and Hillary Clinton. This book gathers together beautiful houses from the Sorrento peninsula and the stretch of coast that extends from Positano to Vietri sul Mare, villas from different eras with different styles, some of which were decorated by famous designers and artists. Each villa surprises the reader with its uniqueness: historic homes that have been transformed over the years and more contemporary villas, some with lush gardens, all equally fascinating thanks to their topographical position, architectural quality, furnishings and interior decorations, which include the truly unique ceramic floors of Vietri. All of them encapsulate curious stories related to the people who have inhabited and transformed them, tales traced by journalist Ana Cardinale with an abundance of detail. The photographs were taken specifically for the book by renowned French photographer Matthieu Salvaing. They include the exteriors and spectacular landscape views, the interiors and furnishings, and numerous decorative details of the ceramic features.
