A social history of 1980s Britain, told through the sport of the time.

Travel back to the 1980s – to Botham’s Ashes and the Brixton riots; the Moscow Olympics and the miners’ strike; the Crucible Theatre and the Falklands – to explore how we got to where we are now. Discover how sport became fully entwined in our national story; how sporting heroes were made, and destroyed; how ‘wars’ were fought on the pitch; and how sport responded to – and drove cultural change in – our society.

From Sebastian Coe to Margaret Thatcher, John Barnes to the ZX Spectrum, Martina Navratilova to Section 28, Everybody Wants to Rule the World speaks to our treasured memories of eighties sports while also throwing light on where things went deeply wrong. In so doing it tells nothing less than the story of how British sport came into the modern era.

Never before have so many people run so many miles, or set themselves such ambitious targets, in pursuit of self-fulfillment: marathons, ultra-marathons, extreme adventures. And never before have people had such high hopes of remaining vigorous and active - young in all but name - long after retiring from the work-place. Yet that last goal, perhaps more precious than any of the others, remains elusive. It can be done, but only a few succeed. Horrified by the thought of breaking off his life-long love-affair with running, Richard Askwith began to think seriously about a question with profound implications for every enthusiastic runner: how can you keep running, happily and well, for the rest of your life - ideally, well into your nineties and beyond?

‘In The Race Against Time, Askwith touches upon something larger than simply running or sport – he helps us to see ourselves … Both inspiring and moving’ – Adharanand Finn, author of Running with the Kenyans

A quest for the secrets of happy, healthy whole-life running, and how runners can keep enjoying their sport, whatever their age

What do you do when the sport that has been your lifeline to physical and mental well-being starts to slip away from you?

Richard Askwith, a life-long running enthusiast, was sunk in mid-life despair. Plagued by injuries and demoralised by failing strength and speed, he was on the point of giving up for good. Then he came across the remarkable world of late-life athletics, and resolved to find out more.

The result is a thrilling, life-affirming quest for the secrets of the happy few who keep on running all through life’s later decades, culminating in a life-changing adventure at the World Masters Athletics Championships. It’s a resounding message of hope for any runner who has felt their joy in their sport being undermined by age.

Colourful, informative and inspiring, The Race Against Time is a story of cold science and heart-warming resilience; of champions and also-rans; of sprinting centenarians and forty-something super-athletes barely touched by age. Its heroes are experts and enthusiasts – scientists, coaches, runners – from many countries, each with a different story to tell. What unites them is a single belief: that you don’t have to take growing old lying down.

This is a book for anyone who has ever felt the healing power of running. It is both a very personal account of one man’s journey from despair to hope, and an exhilarating guide, explaining how timely adjustments to lifestyle and training can slow the progress of physiological decay, while sheer human spirit can, if you are lucky, keep you running happily and healthily, all the way into extreme old age.

'Sunday in Hell' is an iconic documentary about the 1976 Paris-Roubaix Classic, made by the celebrated Danish director Jorgen Leth. Leth's mission was to capture the spirit of this magnificent one-day spectacle through the cobbled roads of northern France and legends of the sport such as Eddy Merckx and Roger de Vlaeminck. He did so using revolutionary camera and sound techniques which improved the experience of watching cycling on screen forever. This book looks at the men and the places behind the film: Leth and his work, the cyclists such as Merckx, De Vlaeminck and the ill-fated winner Marc Demeyer and revisits locations which have changed little to this day.

The Paris-Roubaix Classic. 273 kilometres of torment across the bone-crunching pavé of northern France.
In 1976 the celebrated Danish film director, Jørgen Leth, embarked on an ambitious project to capture the spirit of this spectacular and cruel one-day race. The resulting film, A Sunday in Hell, has become the most admired cycling documentary of all time, and its revolutionary camera and sound techniques have forever changed the way the sport is viewed on screen.
The film centres around legends including Eddie Merkx, Roger De Vlaeminck, Freddie Maertens and Francesco Moser, capturing not just their experiences from the saddle, but also the mood of a nation and its relationship with the most punishing of the Spring Classics.
Sunday in Hell looks at the men, the method and the places behind the film. It observes the creativity of Leth and his collaborators, explores the lives of riders such as unlikely winner Marc Demeyer and revisits locations which have changed little to this day.

Lacking any mechanical knowledge or intuition, he sets off to bully a car from East to West armed only with a top speed of 25 mph, a fan belt made of cotton, wooden wheels (again) and a truckload of 'wise-ass Limey liberal gumption'. His route takes him exclusively through Trump-voting counties as he travels the nation meeting the everyday folk who voted red, or rather orange. Along the way he drives through the disintegrating rust belt, Detroit - the spiritual home of the Model T, through the mid-west, cowboy country and finally threading he way through a lonely stretch of Oregon, 'where everyone is either a lumberjack or a prison officer'. And he needs to do it in three months before the wall goes up and he's booted back to Blighty.

With his trademark blend of slapstick humour, affable insight and butt-clenching peril, Tim Moore invites us on an unforgettable road trip through America. Buckle up!

On the eve of the Giro d'Italia's 100th anniversary, Tim Moore sets out to cycle the route of the first race, all 3,262 km of it. On a 100-year-old bike that he built himself. Fuelled by Chianti, wearing period leather goggles and a woollen cycling shirt, and with the winner of the 1914 Giro's diary as his trusty companion, Tim sets off to tell the story of this historic race, as well as the travails of a middle-aged man cycling up a lot of mountains on a mainly wooden bicycle.

A 3,162 km race. A 48-year-old man. A 100-year-old bike. Made mostly of wood. That he built himself.

Tim Moore sets off to recreate the most appalling bike race of all time. The notorious 1914 Giro d’Italia was an ordeal of 400-kilometre stages, cataclysmic night storms and relentless sabotage – all on a diet of raw eggs and red wine. Of the 81 who rolled out of Milan, only eight made it back.

Committed to total authenticity, Tim acquires the ruined husk of a gearless, wooden-wheeled 1914 road bike with wine corks for brakes, some maps and an alarming period outfit topped off with a pair of blue-lensed welding goggles.

From the Alps to the Adriatic the pair relive the bike race in all its misery and glory, on an adventure that is by turns bold, beautiful and recklessly incompetent.

A few weeks before the actual Tour de France, British writer Tim Moore sets out to cycle the course and offers a laugh-out-loud funny and highly entertaining account of how the great ride would feel when embarked on by an amateur. Racing old men on butchers’ bikes and being chased by cows, Moore soon resorts to standard race tactics – cheating and drugs – in a hilarious and moving tale of true adventure.
