‘Funny, insightful and hugely informative … a charming book’ DAILY MAIL

‘Tremendous … We all need to take stock, and this is the ideal starting point. I learnt a lot from this book and laughed a lot too.’ ROSAMUND YOUNG, author of The Secret Life of Cows

Since highland cattle ransacked his grandmother’s vegetable patch when he was six, Roger Morgan-Grenville has been fascinated by cows.

So at the age of 61, with no farming experience, he signed on as a part- time labourer on a beef cattle farm to tell their side of the story. The result is this lyrical and evocative book.

For 10,000 years, cow and human lives have been intertwined. Cattle have existed alongside us, fed and shod us, quenched our thirst, and provided a thousand other tiny services, and yet most of us know little about them. We are also blissfully unaware of the de-natured lives we often ask them to lead.

Part history, part adventure and part unsentimental manifesto for how we should treat cows in the 21st century, Taking Stock asks us to think carefully about what we eat, and to let nature back into food production.

‘A beautifully written, incredibly timely book’ – Clover Stroud, author of My Wild and Sleepless Nights

When barrister and author Sarah Langford left her city life behind she found herself unexpectedly back in the world of farming. It was not how she remembered. Instead, she saw farmers dealing with very different problems to those faced by her grandfather, considered a hero for having fed a starving nation after war. Now farmers faced accusations of ecological mismanagement by a hostile urban media whilst battling extreme weather and political upheaval. Yet as Sarah learned how to farm and grew closer to the land, she discovered a new generation on a path of regenerative change.

In Rooted, Sarah weaves her own story around those who taught her what it means to be a farmer. She shines a light on the human side of modern farming, and shows how land connects us all, not only in terms of global sustainability but in our relationships with our physical and mental health, our communities and our planet.

‘Heartbreaking and hopeful, this story of a farming revival has never been more important‘ – Esther Freud

Sarah Langford had left her country roots behind to live and work in the city as a barrister. But, as Sarah looked to them to teach her about the land, she also found a new generation of farmers on a path of regenerative change.

In Rooted, Sarah weaves her own story around these farmers – from dairy to arable, traditional to experimental – who taught her what being a farmer means. Intimate and moving, these stories shine a light on the human side of modern farming, and show us how land connects us all, not only in terms of global sustainability but in our relationships with our physical and mental health, our communities, our planet and ourselves.

An authentic, beautifully written portrait of 21st Century farming, this deeply personal account puts a powerful case: that the task of restoring our earth and ensuring a sustainable future both for our food and ourselves, lies in the hands of those who live closest to the land.

With factory farms, climate change and deforestation, this might be the worst time in history to be an animal. In an age of extinction and pandemics, our relationship with the other species on our planet has become unsustainable. What if we took animals' experiences seriously - how would we eat, think and live differently? Henry Mance sets out on a personal quest to see if there is a fairer way to live alongside other species. He goes to work in an abattoir and on a farm to investigate the reality of eating meat and dairy. He explores our dilemmas around hunting wild animals, over-fishing the seas, visiting zoos, saving wild spaces and owning pets.
Factory farms, climate change, deforestation and pandemics have made our relationship with the other species unsustainable. In response, Henry Mance sets out on a personal quest to see if there is a fairer way to live alongside the animals we love. He goes to work in an abattoir and on a farm to investigate the reality of eating meat and dairy.
On New Year's Day 2012, Emma Gray's long-term boyfriend broke off their relationship, leaving her heartbroken - and bewildered. But that was just the first setback the year was to offer: it was followed by the tragic death of her beloved old collie, Bill, and then a serious accident - breaking her back when her quad bike overturned. Her isolated existence - four miles from the road and the nearest neighbour - no longer looked such a good or sensible idea. The question on everyone's lips - could the woman dubbed 'Britain's loneliest shepherdess' ever find lasting love? This book tells the story of how Emma picks herself up from these setbacks to become one of the country's most successful breeders and trainers of Border Collies, and how Emma - surprising herself as well as her friends and family - finds love and lasting happiness where she least expects it.

Emma Gray was just twenty-three when she moved to an isolated farm in Northumberland, becoming Britain’s youngest solo shepherdess. In the seasons that followed, Emma fell in love with its rolling fields, surrounding forest and sturdy farmhouse, tending her sheep and training her dogs – and even found romance.

But when Emma finds herself suddenly alone again, heartbroken and recovering from a serious accident, she wonders if her isolated existence is still such a sensible idea. Even if she recovers, how could she make a proper living on Fallowlees Farm?

In her heartwarming book, Emma tells the story of how she picked herself up and expanded her cattle herd, added more horses to her menagerie, and became one of the country’s most successful breeders and trainers of Border Collies – unexpectedly discovering true love and lasting happiness along the way.

Written with warmth and humour, My Farming Life is a joyous celebration of nature and community, and a delight for anyone who’s ever dreamed of living closer to the countryside.

We love animals, but our relationship with them is laced with self-doubt. We watch nature documentaries and cat videos, and pamper our pets. Yet we also know that most farm animals lead miserable lives and many wild animals are losing their homes. We reluctantly accept this as the price for human progress; no one wants a philosophical debate every time they buy a sandwich. The truth is that the way we treat animals is not only irrational and unethical - it's unsustainable. Henry Mance sets out on a personal quest to see if there is a fairer way to share our planet with the other species who enrich our lives. He goes to work in an abattoir and on a pig farm, and meets chefs, hunters, activists, scientists and conservationists who want to redefine how we think about animals.Even on a planet shaped by human activity, we can find the space to allow other sentient beings to thrive - to put our love for animals into practice.
