Back home again, Gill finds much has changed. Young Lights, the youth theatre group which coaxed her out of her shell, is no more. The theatre itself, once the heartbeat of the community, now feels like a has-been; Gill can relate.

When Gill learns the theatre is approaching its hundredth year, she decides to put on a spectacular anniversary show to give it a comeback and unite the town. She has just eight weeks, but if she can persuade some shy newcomers to step into the spotlight, it might just be possible.

'Such wicked fun. A darkly delicious mystery and sharply observed satire in one wildly entertaining package. Bella Mackie has outdone herself' LUCY FOLEY

Diana's on the hunt for her fourth husband. Such a shame the others all died so quickly…

'Bella Mackie's books are salacious, gripping and very funny' JOE LYCETT

Diana’s on the hunt and has the perfect new target.

Finally, the type of wealth she’s always dreamed of. A five-storey house in Hampstead, unfettered access to London’s liberal elite and a bloated bank account.

If she can ensnare David Farrand, then she really will have clawed her way to the top.

The only snag? David’s daughter, Cat.

Diana might have got her claws into David, but Cat is sharpening her own. Entitled, suspicious and used to getting her own way, she’s been digging into Diana’s past.

And it turns out Diana’s last three marriages have one thing in common: the silly old fools are all six feet under.

To lose one husband is unlucky. To lose two is careless. But three? Three must be murder.

'Bella Mackie’s books are a sharp magnificence; witty, biting and delicious' KATHERINE RUNDELL

From the Booker Prize-shortlisted author of Burnt Sugar comes a gripping psychodrama of unravelling and rebirth – for readers of Katie Kitamura, Deborah Levy, Gwendoline Riley and Elena Ferrante

'Unsparing, exhilarating. This novel boils with brutal insight. Avni Doshi is among the finest prose stylists at work today' Katie Kitamura

'Lush and sharpened to a dagger point… I was consumed by this novel' Amina Cain

‘I married my husband to live in a fairy tale. I imagined us like planets orbiting the sun or gods enacting their myths. Marriage was a solution and I wanted to be dissolved.’

This is a novel about unhappy families – about poison seeping through the domestic space, the bloody battlefield of the home, the enduring threat posed by those closest to us. Stiletto-sharp and darkly hypnotic, it is a gripping psychodrama of unravelling and rebirth.

When a new relationship casts her in the unforeseen role of stepmother to her partner's two children, Helen Mort embarks on a personal quest to understand this most maligned of female archetypes. Alongside her own journey, she revisits stepmothers in fairytale, film and our culture's darkest corners of fantasy. Turning a bold and inventive gaze on this neglected dimension of maternal experience, these are candid dispatches from the shifting terrain of the modern family. As playful as it is moving, 'Stepmother' radiates Mort's signature empathetic warmth, but with the bite of truth.
Can you leave your parents behind? Can you slam the door, walk down the stairs, and decide never to see them again? Can you ever escape the grip of your origins? A son asks himself these questions as he celebrates a bittersweet anniversary: it is a decade since he saw his parents. Now he finally feels able to tell their story. This is his lucid portrait of a family devastated by a father's violence and the woman who silently accepts him; of an airless relationship, unsettled only by the ringing of a telephone, a visiting classmate or a friend who is soon rejected. And it is the story of how a son is possessed by the irrepressible desire to be free: to be himself, to live his own life, to open up to others without fear of reprisals.

'A book that confronts the purity of fact, the tyranny of memory, and the totalitarianism of family like no other' Jhumpa Lahiri

'Intense, sharply imagined and fascinating' Colm Toibin

'On that day, ten years ago, I saw my parents for the last time. Since then I’ve changed phone numbers, houses, continents, I’ve erected an impregnable wall and put an ocean between us. They’ve been the best ten years of my life.'

A son is celebrating a bittersweet anniversary. It is a decade since he saw his parents: the father who ruled through petty acts of intimidation and fear, the mother who silently accepted it, fitting herself in the spaces around others’ lives. As he looks back, he recalls the airless family home, unsettled only by the ringing of a telephone, or a visitor who was soon rejected. And he remembers how he became possessed by the irrepressible desire to be free, to live his own life. But can you ever escape the grip of your origins?

At once unflinchingly honest and razor sharp, The Anniversary is above all a novel of liberation which dismantles the tyranny of the family. It becomes a mirror in which we glimpse something that, even if we have not known it, affects us all.

A witch and her young ward discover a magical, walking house and learn the true meaning of home in this enchanting, cosy fantasy novel.

'Magical, whimsical, and full of heart!’ KESHE CHOW
'I loved every page! A new favourite!’ SARAH BETH DURST
'for those who love their fantasy sweet, ethereal, Ghibliesque, with some slightly spooky dark corners’ BRIGITTE KNIGHTLEY

It's time to put down roots…

Evelyn Sharpe is accustomed to dealing with natural disasters as a land witch, but she longs for a life with a little less danger for her and her adopted daughter, Ruby. So when the opportunity to take over as Caretaker of Thornwood House – a sentient home that acts as the magical heart of the village of Iskendra – arises, it seems almost fated.

When they arrive in sunny Iskendra, Evie and Ruby find the house is nothing like what they expected: First of all, it has walked away from the address. Thornwood House is also grumpy, guarded, and extremely hesitant to allow the two witches through its doors.

Armed with gentle hearts and wild magic, Evie and Ruby begin to form tentative bonds with the house and the citizens of the small town. But there’s something deeply damaged about the building seeping into the forests surrounding Iskendra, and Evie will have to use all her power to protect the roots she’s started to grow.
