50 of the world's greatest dog paintings, with an accompanying essay by an art historian.

A celebration of some of the world’s greatest dog paintings as well as an enlightening look at the history of dog breeds by art historian Susie Hodge, the book features 50 great paintings from throughout history, each depicting a different dog breed.

With an essay about the work of art and the artist as well as a separate piece about the individual dog breeds, the author analyzes the dogs featured in the works of art, explaining the original human uses of specific breeds – such as herding, hunting, defending or lap dogs – and how those dog breeds have changed over time – sizes, colour and uses. It reveals how certain breeds were very popular in history and how the fashions for different breeds changed over time.

Featuring many of the world’s best-loved works, including Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and His Wife by Jan van Eyck, Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and The Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre-Auguste Renior, this informative and attractive new book will appeal to both art and dog lovers alike and form part of a new series.

Gemini Masterpieces
A treasured series celebrating 50 of the world’s greatest paintings throughout history, each on the theme of your favourite animal or plant to bring the story of the breeds and artworks to life.

Hilary Davidson delves into the clothing of one of the world's great authors, providing unique and intimate insight into her everyday life and material world

Hilary Davidson delves into the clothing of one of the world’s great authors, providing unique and intimate insight into her everyday life and material world

What did Jane Austen wear?

Acclaimed dress historian and Austen expert Hilary Davidson reveals, for the first time, the wardrobe of one of the world’s most celebrated authors. Despite her acknowledged brilliance on the page, Jane Austen has all too often been accused of dowdiness in her appearance. Drawing on Austen’s 161 known letters, as well as her own surviving garments and accessories, this book assembles examples of the variety of clothes she would have possessed-from gowns and coats to shoes and undergarments-to tell a very different story. The Jane Austen Hilary Davidson discovers is alert to fashion trends but thrifty and eager to reuse and repurpose clothing. Her renowned irony and wit peppers her letters, describing clothes, shopping, and taste. Jane Austen’s Wardrobe offers the rare pleasure of a glimpse inside the closet of a stylish dresser and perpetually fascinating writer.

This book tells the story of Great Bardfield and its artists, and their famous 'open house' exhibitions, showing how the village and neighbouring landscape nurtured a distinctive style of art, design and illustration from the 1930s to the 1970s and beyond.

In 1925 the artists Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious moved to the Essex village of Great Bardfield, at first sharing lodgings. Over the course of several years and encouraged by Bawden and Ravilious’ work, other artists came to live in the village, forming a community of artists and designers that has continued to today.Among the first to join them were the Rowntree’s, Kenneth and Diana, and Michael Rothenstein and his wife Duffy Ayers. They were followed by John Aldridge, painter and designer of wallpapers (printed, like Bawden’s papers, by the Curwen Press); Walter Hoyle, printmaker and also a wallpaper designer; Marianne Straub, textile designer and weaver; illustrators and printmakers Bernard Cheese and his wife Sheila Robinson. There were also less well-known names, including George Chapman, Stanley Clifford-Smith and Laurence Scarfe.Though the careers of Bawden and Ravilious are well-documented, many of the other artists are less well-known but equally talented, and most have never featured in a significant publication. This book will tell the story of Great Bardfield and its artists, and their famous ‘open house’ exhibitions, showing how the village and neighbouring landscape nurtured a distinctive style of art, design and illustration from the 1930s to the 1970s and beyond.
