One of the most popular photographers on the planet recounts his life and art

By the age of 14, I decided I would be a photographer. ‘It’s what I will do for the rest of my life, until I drop dead.’ I knew when I was very young. It was a definite decision. Don’t ask me why. I just knew it was the right thing.

When Martin Parr was fourteen, his teacher wrote that he was ‘utterly lazy and inattentive’ in a school report. He went on to become one of the most successful and sought-after photographers in the world. Martin has published over one hundred photobooks on many different subjects, from seaside resorts to smoking, over his career. Now, for the first and only time, Martin has produced a book about himself, telling his own story, in his own words.

This autobiography combines over 150 of Martin’s photographs – from his earliest snapshots to the work he is doing today – with his recollections and reflections on each image. We meet a boy growing up in suburbia, who collects obsessively and notices everything. We see him exploding into the public consciousness in the late eighties with a series of startling, ultra-saturated colour images of the British seaside – and scandalising the photography establishment in the process. We see society changing over the decades, from the demise of steam trains, through the opening of the first McDonald’s in Moscow, to the transformations of the post-pandemic world.

As Martin shares his story, his distinctive voice delicately captured by his friend, the writer Wendy Jones, he also reveals his approach to work and commissions; his tricks for gaining access and getting the shot; and he divulges his particular passions: for crowds and queues, fetes and placards, bad weather on beaches, and more.

This is the definitive account of a great photographer’s career, curating the work that has defined his life. By looking at the world through his eyes and his lens, we come away seeing Martin Parr – and ourselves – a little differently.

A classic travelogue exploring the meeting point of Ireland’s landscape and legends, by Britain’s foremost female surrealist painter

“Colquhoun has a very beguiling pen. . . To Irish landscapes she brings a painter’s eye, writing particularly beautifully about skies, twilights, river valleys, sea-frayed coasts and the intensive atmosphere of remote places” – Tatler

Into the world of 1950s Ireland-a lushly green, windswept landscape studded with holy wells and the decaying country houses of a vanished ruling class-arrives Ithell Colquhoun.

An occultist and a surrealist painter, Colquhoun’s travels around the island are guided by her artist’s eye and her feeling for the world beyond our own, as well as her spikily humorous view of the people she meets. We encounter faeries and pagan rituals, ruined churches and Celtic splendour, rowdy bohemians and Anglo-Irish landowners fallen on hard times, as the author carouses through Dublin and tramps the hills of Connemara in this classic travelogue.

Through her unique perceptions we discover a land that is fiercely alive and compelling. It is a place where the wind cries, the stones tell old tales and the mountains watch over the roads and those who travel on them. By intuiting the eerie magic of Ireland, Colquhoun casts her own spell. She offers up a land of myth and legend, stripped of its modern signs, at the same time offering herself to the reader in this portrait of the artist as a young woman.

Richly visual and full of sly wit, this is an account of Ireland as only Colquhoun could see it, a land where myth and magic meet wind and rain, and the song of the secret kingdom is heard on city streets.

“Her responses to the aura of place are keen, and her eye for detail is excitingly sharp” – Sunday Times

In the midst of the 2nd World War, surrealist painter Ithell Colquhoun withdraws from London to Cornwall, searching for a studio and a refuge from the Blitz, as well as from a shattered marriage. So begins a profound and lifelong relationship with Britain’s westernmost county. It is a land of granite ridges and lush valleys, surrounded by sea and steeped in myth, where the ancient Celtic past makes contact with the present. There she finds a hut with no running water or electricity, and lovingly brings it to life, creating a haven for her creative pursuits, and slowly coming to think of these rivers, hills and caves, seen in every season, as her true home.

Drawn to the sacred and the beautiful, the wild and the weird, Colquhoun writes about Cornwall as a living landscape, where every tree, standing stone and holy well is a palimpsest of folklore – and perhaps a place where everyday reality connects to the world beyond. In prose as gorgeously dreamlike as it is sharply witty, this inimitable artist gives us a travelogue deeply attuned to natural rhythms, local atmosphere and the eerie beauty of a place that is as much legend as it is water and rock.

Pierre Assouline presents the definitive biography of one of the great photographers of modern times, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and is the perfect addition to any library of 20th century photography.

The definitive biography of the greatest photographer of modern times – a vital addition to the library of everyone with an interest in photography.

Henri Cartier-Bresson was the eye of the 20th century. His lens chronicled the decisive moments of his time – from Chinese communist victories to the Spanish Civil War and the Liberation of Paris. A co-founder of Magnum Photos, Cartier-Bresson produced unparalleled portraits of his contemporaries, capturing the spirit of Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and William Faulkner.

Cartier-Bresson took Pierre Assouline into his confidence over a number of years, detailing his youthful devotion to surrealism, lifelong passion for drawing, and experiences of war and prison camps. This sensitive biography emerges from a meeting of two minds, revealed with the same truth as one of Cartier Bresson’s photographs.

Discover the life and work of Robert Doisneau, one of the most popular Parisian photographers, with this comprehensive monograph. Doisneau's longtime friend and TASCHEN author Jean Claude Gautrand compiled this selection, for which he had unlimited access to the photographer's extensive archives.

As sensitive to human suffering as to the simple pleasures of life, Robert Doisneau is one of the most celebrated exponents of the Photographie humaniste that swept through the 1950s. Cherished in particular for his soulful portraits of Paris, Doisneau demonstrated a unique ability to find – and perfectly frame – charismatic characters, entertaining episodes, and fleeting moments of humor and affection.

A summation of a spectacular career, this extensive Doisneau collection includes all his best-loved images from Paris alongside many lesser-known compositions which equally rejoice in “the ordinary gestures of ordinary people in ordinary situations.” The many quotations from the photographer throughout the volume immerse the reader in Doisneau’s thoughts and give verbal expression to the sensitivity, warmth, and wit which characterize his pictures.

Through the images, we are transported to the grim suburbs of Doisneau’s youth; the world of manual labor whose nobility he so admired; and to the studios of the many groundbreaking artists that Doisneau captured in moments of reflection and creativity. A number of color shots of the transformed suburbs of Doisneau’s childhood reveal a different, more critical eye to the master photographer.

For this new monograph on all aspects of the life and oeuvre of Robert Doisneau, his longtime friend and TASCHEN author Jean Claude Gautrand had unlimited access to the extensive photo archive Atelier Robert Doisneau. The preface is by Doisneau’s daughters Francine Deroudille and Annette Doisneau.
