A glorious fusion of history and art, A Vast Horizon tells the story of Pablo Picasso and his free-spirited friends, including Lee Miller and Man Ray, in the tumultuous years around the Second World War.

‘Excellent and revealing . . . at the end we feel their loss as if they had been our friends’ – Antony Penrose, Lee Miller Archives

‘At once intimate and expansive . . . a fascinating portrait’ – Clare Mulley, author of Agent Zo

Late summer 1937. Europe is inching towards war. In the South of France a group of friends picnic in a secluded clearing. The women have peeled down their dresses to their waists. A couple kiss playfully while the others look on, laughing. The moment is captured in Lee Miller’s now-iconic image.

Some of the friends are well known, others less so: the dancer Ady Fidelin, the poet Paul Éluard and his wife Nusch, the Surrealists Man Ray and Roland Penrose. They are spending the summer with fellow artists Dora Maar, Eileen Agar and Pablo Picasso.

In A Vast Horizon biographer Anna Thomasson tells the story of their creativity, friendships and pursuit of freedom set against the tense political backdrop of the 1930s, the Second World War and its aftermath. Tracing their lives through their photographs, artworks, poems and letters, from the heady weeks of creativity, sex and collaboration of that Mediterranean summer through the tumultuous years that followed, it is the story of rebellious lives and the redemptive power of art.

Extensively illustrated with around 500 photographs, and divided by decades starting from the 1980s, In the Moment weaves together timelines and stories offering a visual account of 40 years of Reuters photography. Reuters photographers dedicate themselves to covering major news events around the world, often at enormous personal sacrifice. At a time when trust in journalism is eroding, their role is more important than ever. This timely publication draws on revelatory first-person texts from the photographers themselves, capturing not simply life behind the lens, but what it means to bear witness to history.

Offering an unrivalled insight into the workings of an agency that has long been at the centre of global events, In the Moment is a testament to the power and value of news photography.

Imagine sitting across from a 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth on the District Line, or being overtaken by Muhammad Ali on his morning run through Hyde Park. London in Photos documents a rapidly changing society from the funeral of King Edward VII in 1910 through to the birth of the new century.

This collection of photographs takes a deep dive into The Times archives, showcasing 100 images taken by photojournalists as they sought – or stumbled upon – the people and events that shaped our cultural history. The city itself stands not as a backdrop in these photographs, but as a vibrant, living community that takes centre stage. View the familiar landscapes of Big Ben, Battersea Power Station, Wembley Stadium and Piccadilly Circus from unusual and rarely seen perspectives, meet famous figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, the Krays, Elizabeth Taylor and David Bowie on trains, at boxing matches and even in their living rooms. Experience the trials of weather and war alongside normal Londoners going about their days, and celebrate peace, coronations and heatwaves with them. This is the story of a city and the people and moments that made it great.

How does a band come into being? What are the myriad forces that shape the sound, look, and identity of an emerging band? In 1993, Oasis signed to Creation Records and were shortly to begin recording their first album. Unknown, and unknowing what was ahead, the following year began with a masterplan - the creation of Oasis. At the centre of this enterprise was Kevin Cummins, brought on board to help the band find a look that fitted their sound. As chief photographer of Joy Division depicting that band on a snowy bridge and in the chilly environs of Manchester with a backdrop of the black stone of a gothic cathedral, Cummins was well aware of the intersection between the visual and the sonic. In Oasis: The Masterplan we follow Cummins as he photographs the band as they cement their identity.

Noel Gallagher’s thoughts on football, fashion and music and his recollections of that formative year sit alongside those of Cummins himself. Throughout, we see how Oasis played with fashion and were taught how to pose and present themselves as they approached the summer when their first album, Definitely Maybe was released. The story from that moment on is well-known. Featuring 75% previously unseen images the book reveals just how effective the masterplan was to get them to that point.

Renowned photographer Richard Blanshard's candid collection of star-studded photographs from the Cannes Film Festival, taken over two decades

When 22-year-old Richard Blanshard arrived at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, he had no idea that he would become an official photographer for the UK and US film industry for the next two decades. His first assignment was to photograph Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly as they promoted their movie That’s Entertainment, Part II. It was to be the first of many.

Today the only images we see are from the red carpet. Smartphones and social media have made it difficult for the talent to relax, but during his time there Blanshard had unfettered access to the stars and industry greats as they worked, partied and relaxed throughout their time at Cannes. His photographs were designed to document candid, personal moments alongside glitz and glamour to create international publicity. Not only that, but they showcase the unique atmosphere of Cannes and the festival.

Through his remarkable collection, spanning stars and celebrities from the Golden Age of Hollywood through to the rising talent of the era, Blanshard lifts the lid on what life was really like behind the scenes at the world’s most iconic film festival. In an age where publicists, actors and actresses are ever mindful and protective of their image and reputation, we’ll never see another collection quite like it.
