Back in print for the first time in years, this classic of interior-design history showcases the masterful work of David Hicks (1929-1998), who is acknowledged as one of the most important designers of the late twentieth century, in the company of Billy Baldwin and Albert Hadley.

Known for his bold use of color, eclecticism, and geometric designs in carpets and textiles, Hicks turned English decorating on its head in the 1950s and ’60s. His trademark use of electrifying color combinations, and mixing antiques, modern furniture, and abstract paintings became the “in style” for the chic of the day, including Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubinstein. By the 1970s, David Hicks was a brand; his company was making wallpaper, fabrics, and linens and had outposts in eight countries, including the United States where he worked with the young Mark Hampton, and where his wallpaper was used in the White House. “My greatest contribution as an interior designer has been to show people how to use bold color mixtures, how to use patterned carpets, how to light rooms, and how to mix old with new,” he stated in his 1968 work, David Hicks on Living-With Taste, the last authoritative book on his work. Written by his son, Ashley Hicks, with unprecedented access to Hicks’s archives, personal photographs, journals, and scrapbooks, this book is a vibrantly illustrated celebration of a half century of stunning interiors.

The new book from interior design powerhouse Abigail Ahern, Masterclass is based on the building blocks that will make your home look great: seating, lighting, walls, floors and accessories. Abigail demonstrates her style perfectly with original location photography and case studies of fabulous homes.

The furniture is in, the cushions are plumped, the shelves are up but something is missing? a touch of design magic. This book takes interiors to another level – encouraging all of us to become home design rule-breakers, from combining polarizing qualities and using elements that shouldn’t work together but actually do, to never mixing too much of the same period or style in a space. Globally recognized interiors guru Abigail Ahern uses lavish colour photography and tried-and-tested tips to demystify the design process and decode exactly why a space works.

From key furniture arrangements and fail-safe magic formulas for surfaces, to cracking the code on mixing and matching lighting, from ‘fake it till you make it’ flooring to stylish statements with tiles, as well as remedies for renters, there are infinite ways to spice things up. Abigail imparts the tips, tricks and insider knowledge that she has honed over many years at the top of her game. Her friendly and witty writing style means that you’ll feel like you’re learning while being entertained. With this book, you’ll create a relaxing yet swoon-worthy home by layering lighting, combining colours just right, putting the sofa where it belongs (clue: not where you’d think) – and much more.

Abigail divides the home into five main subjects such as Lighting. Each chapter includes handy checklists of pro tips, and ends with a case study of a gorgeous home belonging to a creative or designer including chef Jason Atherton and top designers Jeremiah Brent and Nate Berkus’s phenomenal New York brownstone. It’s a motivational, inspirational and full to the brim of cool and clever ideas, style advice and stories. It’s good to be home!

An artist’s record of the homes of 89 leading creatives from interior designers to ceramicists, antiques dealers, florists and chefs.

SJ Axelby brings new life to interior portraiture, capturing in paint the favourite rooms of 89 leading creatives from interior designers to ceramicists and antiques dealers (and florists and chefs). A sumptuously illustrated record of a home or special project, each interior portrait is accompanied by a charming and quirky interview with the owner, in which we discover invaluable nuggets of design advice, cocktail choice, life hacks and so much more – all illustrated in watercolour by SJ.

There is a long tradition of painting rooms to provide a record of grand homes, giving a glimpse into the life and times of previous generations. Today there is a resurgence of interest in our living spaces, but there is no book in the tradition of illustrated room portraiture to inspire you. SJ Axelby’s Interior Portraits will take you into multiple unique and colourful homes, seen through the artist’s eye.

Creating an authentic and characterful scheme is much like the composition of a painting: the shape, form, contrast, colour, pattern and texture all need to work in harmony. This pictorial guide includes not only Sarah-Jane’s original watercolours but scrapbook pages annotated with design wisdom from each room’s owners, which will enthuse and empower the reader to try new ideas in their own homes. It’s a creative who’s who of the international design world featuring mouth-watering compositions bursting with colour and pattern and displaying the true joy of a home that reflects its owner’s personality.
