A beautifully written and illustrated manifesto for the simple joys of sailing a small boat, filled with useful advice and techniques.

Sailing a dinghy is your gateway to adventure. It requires little of you other than self-reliance and self-confidence, as well as a respect for the subtleties of the local climate and topography. Out at sea in a small boat, nature is not something to be observed disinterestedly: it batters and drenches you, refreshes and enlivens you.

Sailing the Shallows is a manifesto for a different attitude to sailing, far removed from the ostentation and complexity of modern-day yachting. Roger Barnes combines lyrical writing and beautifully drawn illustrations with simple and practical wisdom on experiencing the pure joy of being out on the water in a small boat. We accompany him on his early days afloat in the Lake District, paddling Hildegard ‘the ‘communist canoe’ in France and undertaking more extreme passages (even capsizing) in his beloved Avel Dro. Along the way Roger weaves in advice on skills, techniques and lessons learned: this is a book to be read and re-read not just for the stories but the keen insights into small boat sailing techniques.

Sailing the Shallows describes a lifetime’s journey towards the recognition that cruising in a dinghy is not an imperfect and provisional way to get afloat, but the purest and most perfect way to go sailing.

A riveting journey through the history of mountaineering - before Everest.

The true story of the thrill-seekers, map-makers, soldiers, occultists, artists and porters who paved the way for modern mountaineering.

‘A beautifully written and sure-footed history of mountaineering “before Everest”, full of wonderful stories and spanning continents and centuries. A splendid debut.’ Sir Ranulph Fiennes, author of Shackleton

Beautiful, remote and dangerous – for generations we have looked to the mountains in awe. Yet, for most, that is where the fascination ends. For a rare few, however, the allure of the peaks proved irresistible.

There are the devout Incan priests who, scaling the Andes’ icy slopes to pay tribute to each mountain’s ‘Great Lord’, travelled higher than any European would for centuries. The Gurkha riflemen who joined their commanders in canvassing the Karakoram, admiring the distant summits of Broad Peak and K2 with gleeful anticipation. The tweed-clad mountaineers who made the first serious assaults on Everest, hauling yards upon yards of battered rope through the cold.

Tracing the world altitude record from the ashy slopes of the sacred volcano Llullaillaco to the icy crags and crevasses of the Karakoram, Daniel Light takes a panoramic journey through the storied history of mountaineering before Everest. Joining a cast of colourful characters, The White Ladder offers an ode to mountains’ capacity to enthral, and the fundamental human drive to climb higher and higher.

***

‘Thrilling… Daniel Light delivers stories that are poetic, spiritual and astonishing in their courage and drive.’ Sonia Purnell, author of A Woman of No Importance

‘Daniel Light guides the reader through a mountain-scape that stretches from the Alps to the Himalaya… with the sure footing of a serious student of climbing history, and the élan of a skilled storyteller. This is a book to curl up with on a cold dark night in a comfortable armchair before a bright fire.’ Maurice Isserman, co-author of Fallen Giants

‘Wonderful? a massive story with an enormous cast of characters, among them some of the most compelling figures of mountaineering history.’ Wade Davis, author of Into the Silence

Embark on a paddle boarding adventure across South East England with this guide, unlocking the hidden gems of 13 counties. From Hampshire’s Solent coastline and New Forest rivers to the tranquil waterways of Cambridgeshire, this book offers more than just a collection of routes; it invites readers to discover lesser-known paddle boarding locations that showcase the region’s diverse landscapes. Whether you’re exploring hidden rivers like the Mole or Ivel, meandering through the lush countryside of Sussex, exploring the serene waterways of Kent’s River Medway, or taking on the vibrant energy of London’s Docklands, this new guide provides an unparalleled way to experience the beauty of nature from the water. hat makes this book unique is its focus on the overlooked and underexplored. It doesn’t just cover the well-known rivers, lakes and coasts, but also delves into secret beaches, quiet backwaters and secluded creeks: the peaceful Cuckmere River winding through iconic chalk cliffs to the Seven Sisters in East Sussex, secret saltmarsh creeks in Essex and the calm waters of the Chichester Ship Canal in West Sussex. There’s history, too, with the Grand Union Canal passing through bygone Buckinghamshire villages and the River Thames passes beneath the ramparts of Windsor Castle in Berkshire. The guide also highlights urban adventures, with the Limehouse Cut and Regent’s Canal providing unforgettable routes through the capital, passing landmarks like the Olympic Stadium, Little Venice, and Camden Lock. Each route is carefully detailed, with tips on where to launch, how to stay safe and where to eat, stay or relax along the way. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned paddle boarder, you’ll find a fresh perspective on South East England’s stunning waterways, inviting you to connect with nature in a new way.
